Broxbourne developed around inns on what is now called the A10, the Great Cambridge Road. The High Street (now the A1170) is lined with old houses and inns dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Hertfordshire Golf and Country Club was originally built in 16th century, but it was later altered and expanded.
In the Domesday Book, Broxbourne Mill is listed under Brochtsborne, the Manor of Broxbourne. In the time of Edward the Confessor, the manor was held by Stigand, the Archbishop of Canterbury, but had passed into Norman hands after the Conquest. The manor was granted to the Knights Hospitallers by King John until the Dissolution, when it passed to John Cock, after whose family Cock Lane was named.
