Continue readingHemel Hempstead is a large town in Hertfordshire, England. It is about 24 miles (39 km) northwest of London and is part of the Greater London Urban Area. According to the 2011 Census, the population was 97,500.
It was formed as a new town after the Second World War and has been a settlement since the 8th century. It received a town charter by King Henry VIII in 1539. The borough is part of the district of Dacorum and the Hemel Hempstead parliamentary constituency. Nearby towns include Watford, St Albans, Hatfield, and Berkhamsted.
Hemel Hempstead is located 27 miles (43 km) northwest of central London in a shallow chalkland valley. The Chiltern Hills are bordered to the north and west by mixed farmland and woodland with scattered villages. Berkhamsted lies to the west. Along the south-western edge of the town, the Bulbourne River flows through Boxmoor. In the south lies Watford and the beginnings of the Greater London metropolitan area. To the east lies St Albans, a historic cathedral and market town and part of the London commuter belt, like Hemel Hempstead.
Hemel Hempstead has a mixture of heavy and light engineering companies that have attracted a significant number of IT and telecommunication businesses due to its proximity to London and the UK motorway network. Despite this, as is common with many new towns, it has a much narrower business base than established areas such as Watford and St Albans.
Hemel Hempstead station is located in Boxmoor, one mile south of town. Services between London Euston and Midlands are provided by London Northwestern Railway, operating frequent West Coast Main Line services between Euston and South Croydon. Direct services to South Croydon are provided by the West London Line.
