Welwyn Garden City is located in Hertfordshire, England, approximately 20 miles from Central London. It was England’s second garden city (founded 1920) and one of the first new towns (designated 1948).
The city is unique as a garden city as well as a new town, as it embodies the ideals of physical, cultural, and social planning of its era.
There are seven local authority wards in Welwyn Garden City, which is a part of Welwyn Hatfield Borough. It is located in the parliamentary constituency of Welwyn Hatfield in Hertfordshire. Welwyn Hatfield’s headquarters can be found in Welwyn Garden City. Grant Shapps is the Member of Parliament for Welwyn Hatfield (Conservative). Unlike Hatfield and Welwyn, which have limited responsibilities, Welwyn Garden City lacks a parish council, although it had one between 1921-1927.
The railway station is located in the town centre. The Great Northern train runs south to London King’s Cross and London Moorgate, and north to Stevenage, Hitchin, Cambridge, and Peterborough.
Welwyn Garden City is well connected to other major arterial roads, such as the A1(M) and A414. As well as the A1(M), Great North Road runs through the area. There are also connections to St Albans, Harpenden and Luton (via B653), Hatfield (via A1000 and A1001) and Hertford (via B1000). As car ownership grew in the 1950s and 1960s, the town struggled to construct garages and hard-standing spaces to accommodate the additional vehicles, which led to many properties losing their traditional hedges and front gardens to make room for driveways.
