Caring for someone with dementia involves balancing medical, emotional, and practical needs while preserving dignity and independence. A person-centred approach focuses on routines, preferences, and meaningful activities, supported by tailored care plans and networks of family, professionals, and community groups. Daily care covers communication, hygiene, nutrition, mobility, safety, and managing behavioural changes. Caregivers should adapt environments, use clear communication, and plan ahead for health, transport, and end-of-life decisions. Self-care for carers is essential to avoid burnout and ensure sustainable, compassionate support.
Continue readingWe know that most elderly people want to spend the rest of their lives living in a home of their own. The problem with that is that most houses simply aren’t built to be safe for the elderly. Falls are still the most frequent and serious type of accident in people aged 65 and over and a simple fall can lead to serious health problems. Falls destroy confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence.
Continue readingDementia is a syndrome, not a single disease, marked by progressive decline in memory, thinking, and behaviour due to brain cell damage. It includes Alzheimer’s, vascular, Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementia, each with distinct causes and symptoms. Cognitive decline, mood changes, and loss of daily function worsen over time. Risk factors include age, genetics, and lifestyle, while prevention focuses on brain health, managing heart conditions, and staying socially and mentally active. Dementia remains a major global health challenge with rising prevalence.
Continue readingThe village of Chinnor is located about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of Thame in South Oxfordshire. It is a small settlement located under the Chiltern escarpment along the Icknield Way. The civil parish of Emmington has been incorporated since 1932. Statistics indicate that the parish has a population of 5,924 as of the 2011 Census.
Chinnor is mostly a commuter village for London, High Wycombe, Aylesbury, and Thame. In the past, Chinnor had a large cement plant, and before that a number of furniture-makers.
A railway was constructed between Princes Risborough and Watlington in 1872, and it passed through the parish. During the 20th century, Chinnor acquired a railway station. Before it was taken over by the Great Western Railway in 1883, the railway was independent. During the 1920s, sidings were built to serve the Chinnor cement works. Chinnor railway line was closed to passengers in 1957 and goods in 1961. Chinnor cement works was serviced by the rail line between Princes Risborough and Chinnor until 1989.
The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway, a heritage railway operated by some weekend and bank holidays since 1994, has had a terminus at Chinnor railway station since 1994.
Chinnor is also connected by bus to Thame, High Wycombe and Princes Risborough on the Chiltern Main Line.
